The Carfree Day in Toronto
In Toronto the carfree enthusiasts closed a main section of Yonge Street to only pedestrians and cyclists. The normal bumper to bumper traffic was replaced with
people strolling up and down the street, Cyclists were rolling from exhibit to exhibit, there was some miniature golf and it was a fairly tranquil, quiet affair.
Mayor Miller and other dignitaries talked about alternative ways to get
around the city although those who drive cars in the city didn't stop
for the day. As one of the participants said, “As a cyclist who no longer owns a car, I am one of the converted but the event didn't have any real killer apparently to inspire the
car commuter to quit the habit. Hope do be more involved next year”.
