Carfree Day in Munich
Starting with the first World Carfree Day in 2000, the Munich environmental NGO Green City presents the Streetlife Festival in cooperation with the Department of Public Health and Environment on one of Munich's main boulevards, making it carfree for a big street party.
The purpose is to showcase alternative forms of mobility and the various ways public spaces (i.e. streets) can be used. An harmonious combination of entertainment and information is created under various themes: From Street–Sports to Street-Art, Streetbikes to Sustainable Energy, relaxed lounging to multicultural dancing, there is something for everyone.
The second Streetlife Festival of 2009 took place on September 12-13 and was once again one of the most attended events in the city of Munich, with more than 150,000 visitors. They enjoyed live music, food from all around the world and, most importantly, were informed about sustainable transportation and innovative use of urban spaces.
In addition, Green City participated in the global PARK(ing) DAY. This year, 16 separate parking areas in downtown Munich were transformed into public green spaces where passersby could relax, have a drink or a snack and chat. In the PARKs lawn turf was laid out, hammocks and deck chairs were set up and there was a variety of entertainment. The message was clear: Less cars make room for more green in Munich!
